2. Eli Lilly : will launch once weekly diabetes drug : BYDUREON next year to US market . In the first half of next year, this bydureon hopefully will holds its own to against VICTOZA (Novo Nordisk’s once daily diabetes drug) It’s a new class of therapy, it can cause weight loss. BYDUREON already approved by EMEA last month.


3. Diabetes : new research about nut. People with NIDDM who eat 2 ounces of nuts everyday as a replacement of carbohydrate can gain clinically meaningful reduce in their Hb A1C and LDL without gaining weight.


4. Chronic CV death in elderly with hypertension : Verapamil & Trandolapril showed drug interaction with NSAIDs that can increase death risk by cardiovascular events . To reduce this risk the use of NSAIDs (Celecoxib, Ibuprofen, Naproxen) can be replaced with Acetaminophen as the 1st line or reduce the NSAIDs dose.

8. FDA approfved generic extended release capsules of VENLAFAXINE which indicated to treat major depressive disorder and social anxiety disorder. VENLAFAXINE will be marketed in several strength : 37.5 mg , 75mg, and 150mg. Originator of this drug is Wyeth but this drug approval from FDA is for Orchid chem & Pharm.


9. Vit C assumed to be able to reduce uric acid level in blood. Trial from Univ. John Hopkins in Maryland showed total 13 from 556 subject treated with 500mg of vit C/day experienced uric acid level decrease during the trial.


10. Sartan has been used for patients with hypertension (especially in patients with diabet). Candesartan and telmisartan can increase the risk of cancer, in the other hand, Losartan apperars to decrease this risk. FDA also made a statement that this class of drug does not pose a cancer risk.
    NEXIUM has been approved in Japan for the treatment of acid related conditions. This drug is currently available in 120 countries as the world’s leading PPI. AstraZeneca plans to launch Nexium in Japan in second half of 2011.


11. Scientes has found a new idea to prevent E. coli infectious by eating fruit. The idea is to spray a kind of peptide to the fruit. The peptide designed to interfere the DNA repair mechanism of the E. coli that will enable this bacteria to survive exposure to human gastric acid.


12. New standard definition of bleeding. There are some scales has been made to define bleeding. The “0-6 scale” refers to measurement of no bleeding condition up to fatal bleeding condition. Although there was several way to define bleeding, people nowadays still apply for new standard definition of bleeding to FDA.


13. Telaprevir is one of two drugs recently approved by FDa to treat hepatitis C only in conjuction with Ribavirin and pegylated interferon. The 44% of patient cured by using the standard therapy as a monotherapy while adding Telaprevir increase up to 75% patients cured. This significant effect also shows that this combination increase the side effects of both drugs, especially the fact that Telaprevir cause more frequent and severe anemia.


14. Metformin may prevent or delay the development of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in adolescence. Comparative study of the efficacy of early vs late metformin treatment in girls at high risk of developing PCOS show that early metformin therapy can prevent or delay the hirsutism, androgen excess, oligomenorrhea, and PCOS more effectively than late metformin.


15. HIV/AIDS drugs finally going generic : Gilead and Mylan has struck a deal to allow 4 of Gileads AIDS drugs to be generic made. Roughly 33million people worldwide have HIV and the patients in poorer countries have to wait until the patent of these drugs expire. Not all drugs to treat HIV and AIDS are available at suitable cheap price for poor countries. This means that many of the newer and more effevtive drugs are only available in the West.
